Traditionally Made Knives, Blades and Tools

As a Sheffield based company supplying professionals, businesses and individuals with a range of knives and blades, Knife-Point are proud of our Sheffield roots. Sheffield has a long history of quality knife making behind it, and our business is a testament to the Steel City’s fantastic reputation in the field of knife and tool making. Our selection of hooked blades and concave blades are second to none, and we will go out of our way to find the perfect knife or blade for your project. Our team of staff are committed to keeping the tradition of Sheffield knife making alive and well, and our range of products reflects this commitment.

The knife and blade making process can be broken down into a number of steps. The initial shape of the blade can be produced using forging, by heating the blade to a very high temperature and shaping using traditional tools such as hammers and anvils. By using a range of modern and traditional techniques, Knife-Point is able to honour the traditional methods and harness the advantages of more modern techniques guaranteed to ensure quality and longevity of our Dolphin knife and Delphin knife range.

Blade blanks are often used in the Dolphin knife making and Delphin knife making process, depending on the thickness of the material and the alloy content of the steel. When manufacturing larger quantities of knives and blades, they can be made using water jet cutters, electron beam cutting, stamping sheet material or even lasers. Belt grinders, files or hacksaws can also be used to profile a blank in the knife and blade making process. Blade blanks can also be made using files, grinding wheels or small belt sanders, but more commonly, experienced knife makers use a large industrial belt grinder.

Heat treatment is commonly used on the knives and blades supplied at Knife-Point, including the Dolphin knives and Delphin knives that we manufacture. The process of quenching is an important step after heat treatment, but can be dependent on the type of metal used. This can be carried out using oil, animal tallow, water, air or brine.

There are a variety of blade finishes used in the production of Dolphin knives and Delphin knives. By buffing the blade with chrome oxide, or by hand rubbing the blade with fine wet-or-dry abrasive paper, a high shine can be created. Our range of knives, including Stanley knives, Dolphin knives and Delphin knives are of the highest quality and a true reflection of the rich knife making history of Sheffield.

Effective Storage of Your Stanley Knife Blades

As experts in the manufacture and supply of knives and blades, Knife-Point know how important it is to keep your Stanley knives and trimming knife blades in good condition to ensure that they last a long time and remain effective. Looking after your knives before and after use is the key to keeping them in good condition, and storing them properly can go a long way to keeping your knives and blades in top condition for years to come.

When storing your Stanley 1992, Stanley 5192 and Stanley 1996 knives, keeping them away from moisture, damp and water is an absolute must. It is best to keep them somewhere cool and dry, away from light and dust. Moisture can be damaging to knives and blades because it can lead to corrosion and rust on the blade. Wiping your Stanley knife blade down after use with a lint free cloth is also a good way of extending its life, as even the natural moisture and perspiration from your skin may cause damage to some blades.

By keeping your Stanley knives and trimming knife blades away from moisture and dust, you can significantly extend their lives and keep their performance.

Cleaning Stanley Knife Blades to Ensure Long Life

Cleaning your Stanley knife blades effectively is a must for keeping your knives and blades in top condition. After all, why invest money on a Stanley 1992, Stanley 5192 or Stanley 1996 knife if you’re not going to look after it properly? Water can be used to keep your Stanley knife clean, as long as you follow the instructions below.

You can use water and soap to clean your Stanley knife blade, as this will effectively remove any dirt or any build up of oils that may have collected on the blade. Water must be used carefully though, as it can cause corrosion if not dried off properly or left on too long. If you do have to use soap and water on your Stanley knife blade, you must take care that the blade is rinsed properly afterwards with hot water to make sure all remaining soap has been removed. It is also important to dry the knife thoroughly afterwards, preferably using a lint free cloth.

If you want to keep your Stanley knife blade in the best working order, following these tips for cleaning it will ensure that your blade will last you the longest amount of time.

The traditional knife and blade making process

The traditional knife and blade making process can be broken down into four main steps. The initial shaping of the knife is achieved through the process of forging or blanking. Forging occurs when the blade is exposed to and heated up to a very high temperature. It is then shaped using hammer and anvil to achieve a shape that is very close to the final desired dimensions. Our range of Olfa safety knives, gr8 pro safety knives, Bosch planer blades and Stanley knives, including Stanley 1992, Stanley 5192 and Stanley 1996 are made using a mixture of traditional and modern techniques, ensuring that your Stanley knife, safety knife or planer blade will be of the highest quality and workmanship.

Blade blanks are often made in the production of quality knives and blades including snap off blades, hooked blades, concave blades, and safety knives.  A variety of methods can be used to create these blade blanks, dependant on the material thickness and the alloy content of the steel. Sometimes blade blanks are stamped using sheet material, and sometimes water jet cutters, electron beam cutting or lasers are used. Custom knife makers on a smaller scale may cut their steel blade blanks using a metal cutting bandsaw. A variety of different methods can be used to profile a blank including using belt grinders, files or hacksaws.

If no power equipment is available, this process can be carried out with files, if the steel has not been hardened yet. Grinding wheels, or small belt sanders are used by beginners to make knives and blades. Well equipped and experienced knife and blade makers usually use a large industrial belt grinder, or a belt grinder made specifically for this purpose. Pre-polish grinding on a heat treated blade can be done if the blade is kept cool to keep the temperature of the metal at a consistent level.

Swann-Morton are Blade-y Marvellous

Swann-Morton are a Sheffield based company, founded in 1932 and have since become world leaders in the manufacturing of surgical blades, scalpels and handles. Their blades act as enabling tools for many professionals from all walks of life, as Swann-Morton offer consistency, reliability and cleverly combine their traditional blade making skills with the latest technologies. The main professionals consistently using Swann-Morton blades are Surgeons, Chiropodists and Podiatrists, Dentists and Veterinarians.

Surgeons and Swann-Morton

There are 34 blade shapes and 12 different handles made by Swann-Morton for their general Surgical Blade range. These blades are used throughout many types of theatres and practices, such as Cardiology, Orthopaedics and Reconstructive surgery units. Blade size and shape is chosen by the surgeon themselves. It is usually dependent on their expertise as to what enables them to be most flexible and dexterous in their specific field.

Chiropodists, Podiatrist and Swann-Morton

The preferred Swann-Morton products for Chiropodists and Podiatrists are the range of carbon or stainless steel sterile surgical blades which are ideally suited to them, both practically and hygienically. Often the Swann-Morton ‘Sabre’ is a Chiropodists choice of tool, with its unique shape and ‘closed’ cutting edge used for ‘paring’ and ‘scraping’. This enables both close, fine work, without gouging, leaving a smooth, rounded finish on the touched areas.

Dentists and Swann-Morton

Just like the Chiropodists and Podiatrists, Dentists appreciate the carbon and stainless steel sterile surgical blades for a reason. Dentists also use them to perform surgical techniques, including: implantology, labial fraenum, incising abscesses, periodontal surgery and raising skin flaps. The most popular Swann-Morton blade is No.15 because of its ideal blade shape making it perfect for the short, precise incisions which dentist need to make regularly, and amusingly, are the same size blades used for doing neurosurgery on rabbits.

Veterinarians and Swann-Morton

Again, Vets prefer to use carbon and stainless steel sterile surgical blades during surgery. The type and size of those blade do however vary, often due to the size of the animal and the medical problem, more so than the ability or experience of the vet. The versatility of the blades are apparent by reading the following:

  • Neurosurgery on a small animal eg Rabbit, would require a 15 or No.20 Swann-Morton surgical blade.
  • A skin Incision on a large animal eg Cow, would require a 22 Swann-Morton surgical blade.
  • Performing specialist vaginal surgery on a Horse would require a 3L or 4L Swann-Morton Handle.

How to Change Your Handheld Planer Blades

Changing your handheld planer blades is not a difficult process, as long as you follow a few basic steps. As experts in the supply of a variety of knives to the Sheffield area and further afield, we’re well placed to guide you on such matters. With that in mind, we’ve put together a few key steps to follow that will stand you in good stead when it comes to installing new planer blades.

Make Sure There is No Power Coming to the Tool

The first tip is an obvious one. To ensure your safety when you’re carrying out a change of blades, always make sure that the power supply is disconnected to the device. Changing the blades whilst the device is live is an absolute no.

Loosen the Bolts and Remove the Existing Planer Blades

The next step is to gently loosen the bolts or fasteners on your handheld device. You don’t need to completely remove the fastenings and easy blade removal will be possible through the initial loosening. Make sure that you take care when removing the blade as it’s likely to still be very sharp. You can then spin the cutter head round and repeat the process on the other side.

Replace with the New Blades

Once you’ve removed the existing blades you can then replace them with your new planer blades. To do this, gently fit the new blade with the shape of the planer blade groove and slide it into place. Hold it in the position where you would like it to remain, then take your wrench and loosely tighten up the outer two bolts on your handheld planer – simple.

Take Care When Tightening

During the tightening process you need to take care when tightening. The new blade will be extremely sharp so don’t rush through the replacement process. Before sliding the blade into place you may also need to remove any resin that has been left behind. You can do this using paraffin and oil or by gently scraping the debris away.

Make Sure the Alignment is Correct

The final thing to take care of is to verify that the knife is central with relation to its position on you handheld planer. This is essential, as it will prevent the knife from rubbing on the edges of the machine. Once this has been guaranteed you can finish tightening the bolts. Again, simply repeat this on the other side.

5 Interesting Facts about Stanley Knife Blades

Stanley knife blades have been at the forefront of the knife manufacturing market for decades. We at Knife-Point regularly supply them in a vast array of quantities and sizes; meaning that customers are consistently choosing us as their provider.

It’s always interesting to find out more about how products originally came about; and with that in mind we’ve put together a list of 5 interesting facts about these blades for your enjoyment:

The Origins of the Company Began in 1843

The company was originally formed all the way back in 1843 by Frederick T. Stanley. Initially, the business was set up as the Stanley Works and operated as a bolt and door hardware manufacturing company located in New Britain. The company subsequently progressed towards the established presence it is today, via a merger with another company and a couple of name changes.

The Company Have Thoroughly Researched the Requirements of Their Customers

One of the things that the company has done to set themselves apart from the competition is to really get stuck into exactly what it is that their customers require. They extensively consider what the blades is going to be used for, what material it will be used in conjunction with and how exactly the customer will implement it. The thorough testing around these constraints is impressive; and provides a grounded reason as to why Stanley have become such a popular brand.

They Have an Array of Products Available

There are an abundance of Stanley knife blades available on the market, many of which you can find at Knife-Point. Heavy-duty straight blades, original Stanley blades and concave blades are just some of the many products that are available, ensuring that the customer always has plenty of choice on offer to them.

Many Stanley Knife Blades are Manufactured with an Induction Hardened Edge

A number of Stanley knife blades have been manufactured with an induction-hardened edge. This only adds to the overall quality of the blades and plays a big part in the customer satisfaction they deliver. When the induction-hardening technology is applied to the edges of blades they last longer and are resultantly better value.

They Are Used by a Number of Industries

Roofing, flooring, packaging, hobby craft and graphic design are just some of the many trades within which Stanley knife blades are used – there really is so much versatility on offer. From graphic designers requiring the highest levels of accuracy within their work; through to flooring tradesman looking for the perfect finish, there really is no shortage of success stories.

How Planer Blades Have Evolved Over Time

Over time, the way that woodworking planer blades have been used has changed significantly. In the past, a woodworking planer was typically a handheld tool; but technology has seen their design evolve. Contemporary power planers are now widely implemented, and more accurate work is being carried out as a result.

Power planers are accompanied by a planing platform, which allows for speedy and accurate adjustments of wood thickness. Power planers also account for flexibility, as they can be operated either electronically or manually depending on the requirements of the job.

Advanced Technology

Maintaining Your Planer Blades Properly

When it comes to understanding whether your product needs to be maintained, it is helpful to do your research (we often provide advice through this blog). Perhaps the best way to test the sharpness of the blade is by tilting it up to the light. By observing how the light reflects off the bevel of the blade, you can gauge its condition. If the blade is sharp, then the bevel will appear flat.

If it requires maintenance, then you will need to follow a number of simple steps to do this successfully. There are a number of resources available to tell you how you can do it best; which include guidelines on using an oiled whetstone, the importance of removing chips on the blade and ensuring that the blade is worked with a pushing action and not a pulling action

Distribution and Balance

When actually implementing the use of planer blades proper balance is essential. Distribution of body weight – by keeping your feet apart in a comfortable position – enables you to maintain the closest control when using a wood planer. Naturally, the end product will emanate accuracy and quality as a result.

It is also useful to wait a few seconds when you start up your planer to carry out work. This enables the motor to reach full speed; and the blade can now be eased into contact with the material. From this point, you can push forward at a steady pace, ensuring that you continue to apply pressure on the front of the planer as it meets your piece of work.
