THE Pen Knife

stanley-knife-knife-pointThis month, the top five pen knives have been published.  This list has been compiled in order to show you which the best pen knife or utility knife is for you, depending on what you need it for and how heavy duty a knife you need.  Penknives are indispensable, are small enough to fit in your pocket and you can quite literally take them anywhere.  So have a look and see what the top five knives are, though be aware they are in no particular order:

  • DeWalt 10035
  • Stanley 199E
  • Milwaukee Fastback II
  • Stanley Fat Max
  • Irwin FK150

Oh look!  There are two knives from Stanley in this line up – they must be doing something right and are obviously loved and trusted by so many people – tradesmen, craftsmen and DIY-ers alike!

The Stanley 199E

This is the smaller of the two Stanley knives in this line up.  It may be called the Stanley 199E but this 6 inch long knife is also known as the indestructible classic.  It has a certain 1960s look about it, aesthetically and is now reinforced at the nose now (though it never originally had this!)  The blades needed for this are lock-in blades so you will need a screwdriver in order to change the blade if it becomes blunt.

Stanley Fat Max

The Stanley Fat Max is a much bigger knife than the Stanley 199E – in fact, it’s a whole 1.5 inches bigger.  Due to the extra length, this makes the knife much easier for you to hold and work with, especially if you are wearing thick gloves for protection and safety reasons.  It has a big spare blade compartment which is built in which is great because you rarely have to restock when it comes down to blades.  This knife in the top five pen knives has won the Editors choice.

What should every DIYer have in their Toolkit?

Toolkit-knife-knives-blade-knife-pointIn February, a survey was undertaken, asking members of the general public what their top 10 favourite (and by that it meant useful) workbench tools were.  Home DIYers were asked to participate in this questionnaire, in order to obtain what the most essential tools were in the British home.  Here, avid reader, are the results…

10th Spanner

9th Screwdriver

8th Hammer

7th Tape Measure

6th Socket Set

5th Pliers

4th Cordless Drill

3rd Saw

2nd Spirit Level

But can you guess what beat all other tools in to the number one top spot?  A rather generic term but it helpfully encompasses many types…the utility knife!  To define a utility knife, this is a short bladed knife which is able to cut through many different surface types – anything from wood to cardboard.  A modern utility knife has a blade which snaps off so that it is easily replaceable when it is getting a little blunt so as not to damage the item being cut through snagging or tearing.

Stanley Knife is Number One

The Stanley Knife – a small but heavy duty, extremely effective piece of kit which no one – home DIYer or professional craftsman – should ever be without.  There are many varieties to choose from, though some more popular than others, you will hard heard of StanleyStanley, for example, make many different types of snap off blade utility knives, including the Stanley Fat Max and the Stanley Interlock Knife.

Stanley Fat Max

The Stanley Fax Max has a blade wiper which helps to elongate the life of the knife and the blades individually, making it more economical as it lasts longer when you remove the excess debris.  Its handle is soft and padded enabling you to have maximum comfort and control, both at the same time.

Stanley Interlock Knife

The Stanley Interlock Knife is an extra heavy duty knife with snap off blades or the option of non segmented blades.  Despite it being a heavy duty and very sturdy knife, it is a very light knife because it is made out of diecast metal.  The interlocking mechanism is easily operated by being twisted and the wedge lock keeps the blades securely in position.
