Traditionally Made Knives, Blades and Tools

As a Sheffield based company supplying professionals, businesses and individuals with a range of knives and blades, Knife-Point are proud of our Sheffield roots. Sheffield has a long history of quality knife making behind it, and our business is a testament to the Steel City’s fantastic reputation in the field of knife and tool making. Our selection of hooked blades and concave blades are second to none, and we will go out of our way to find the perfect knife or blade for your project. Our team of staff are committed to keeping the tradition of Sheffield knife making alive and well, and our range of products reflects this commitment.

The knife and blade making process can be broken down into a number of steps. The initial shape of the blade can be produced using forging, by heating the blade to a very high temperature and shaping using traditional tools such as hammers and anvils. By using a range of modern and traditional techniques, Knife-Point is able to honour the traditional methods and harness the advantages of more modern techniques guaranteed to ensure quality and longevity of our Dolphin knife and Delphin knife range.

Blade blanks are often used in the Dolphin knife making and Delphin knife making process, depending on the thickness of the material and the alloy content of the steel. When manufacturing larger quantities of knives and blades, they can be made using water jet cutters, electron beam cutting, stamping sheet material or even lasers. Belt grinders, files or hacksaws can also be used to profile a blank in the knife and blade making process. Blade blanks can also be made using files, grinding wheels or small belt sanders, but more commonly, experienced knife makers use a large industrial belt grinder.

Heat treatment is commonly used on the knives and blades supplied at Knife-Point, including the Dolphin knives and Delphin knives that we manufacture. The process of quenching is an important step after heat treatment, but can be dependent on the type of metal used. This can be carried out using oil, animal tallow, water, air or brine.

There are a variety of blade finishes used in the production of Dolphin knives and Delphin knives. By buffing the blade with chrome oxide, or by hand rubbing the blade with fine wet-or-dry abrasive paper, a high shine can be created. Our range of knives, including Stanley knives, Dolphin knives and Delphin knives are of the highest quality and a true reflection of the rich knife making history of Sheffield.

Effective Storage of Your Stanley Knife Blades

As experts in the manufacture and supply of knives and blades, Knife-Point know how important it is to keep your Stanley knives and trimming knife blades in good condition to ensure that they last a long time and remain effective. Looking after your knives before and after use is the key to keeping them in good condition, and storing them properly can go a long way to keeping your knives and blades in top condition for years to come.

When storing your Stanley 1992, Stanley 5192 and Stanley 1996 knives, keeping them away from moisture, damp and water is an absolute must. It is best to keep them somewhere cool and dry, away from light and dust. Moisture can be damaging to knives and blades because it can lead to corrosion and rust on the blade. Wiping your Stanley knife blade down after use with a lint free cloth is also a good way of extending its life, as even the natural moisture and perspiration from your skin may cause damage to some blades.

By keeping your Stanley knives and trimming knife blades away from moisture and dust, you can significantly extend their lives and keep their performance.

Cleaning Stanley Knife Blades to Ensure Long Life

Cleaning your Stanley knife blades effectively is a must for keeping your knives and blades in top condition. After all, why invest money on a Stanley 1992, Stanley 5192 or Stanley 1996 knife if you’re not going to look after it properly? Water can be used to keep your Stanley knife clean, as long as you follow the instructions below.

You can use water and soap to clean your Stanley knife blade, as this will effectively remove any dirt or any build up of oils that may have collected on the blade. Water must be used carefully though, as it can cause corrosion if not dried off properly or left on too long. If you do have to use soap and water on your Stanley knife blade, you must take care that the blade is rinsed properly afterwards with hot water to make sure all remaining soap has been removed. It is also important to dry the knife thoroughly afterwards, preferably using a lint free cloth.

If you want to keep your Stanley knife blade in the best working order, following these tips for cleaning it will ensure that your blade will last you the longest amount of time.

The traditional knife and blade making process

The traditional knife and blade making process can be broken down into four main steps. The initial shaping of the knife is achieved through the process of forging or blanking. Forging occurs when the blade is exposed to and heated up to a very high temperature. It is then shaped using hammer and anvil to achieve a shape that is very close to the final desired dimensions. Our range of Olfa safety knives, gr8 pro safety knives, Bosch planer blades and Stanley knives, including Stanley 1992, Stanley 5192 and Stanley 1996 are made using a mixture of traditional and modern techniques, ensuring that your Stanley knife, safety knife or planer blade will be of the highest quality and workmanship.

Blade blanks are often made in the production of quality knives and blades including snap off blades, hooked blades, concave blades, and safety knives.  A variety of methods can be used to create these blade blanks, dependant on the material thickness and the alloy content of the steel. Sometimes blade blanks are stamped using sheet material, and sometimes water jet cutters, electron beam cutting or lasers are used. Custom knife makers on a smaller scale may cut their steel blade blanks using a metal cutting bandsaw. A variety of different methods can be used to profile a blank including using belt grinders, files or hacksaws.

If no power equipment is available, this process can be carried out with files, if the steel has not been hardened yet. Grinding wheels, or small belt sanders are used by beginners to make knives and blades. Well equipped and experienced knife and blade makers usually use a large industrial belt grinder, or a belt grinder made specifically for this purpose. Pre-polish grinding on a heat treated blade can be done if the blade is kept cool to keep the temperature of the metal at a consistent level.

Stanley Knife Versus Cable Cutters

stanley-knife-blade-knife-pointApparently, this has been a longstanding debate between tradesmen, especially, it seems, with Electricians.  So, we have decided to have a little investigation and see if we can come to some form of conclusion to help our tradesmen customers make the right decision for them, their customers and with their safety in mind.  Obviously, it depends on what type of cables and their thickness, but we hope to find an answer for general use on data and communication, domestic twin and skin cables.  Though industrial SWA cables will most probably be a different matter altogether.

The Pros of the Cable Cutters and the Stanley Knife

Firstly, it sounds as if most tradesmen feel that cable cutters and Stanley Knives are not an interchangeable commodity – it’s an either or solution.

Cable cutters are more bulky, more expensive and tend to be used when Stanley Knives have been exhausted.  They are used on much thicker wires but aren’t always able to solve the problem.  There are also queries as to the safety of the user, should fingers (for example) get in the way!

A Stanley Knife is slimmer, but sturdy.  They are cheaper and new blades can be acquired economically and changed oneself extremely easily.  They have a screw locking safety system to avoid losing your fingers, too.  Yes, okay, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to cut through an industrial SWA cable with a Stanley Knife, but it’s not easy or always possible with cable cutters.

Regarding safety, it is debated as to whether wearing gloves is helpful or not.  It seems apparent that although gloves can protect your fingers from getting cut, or worst case scenario, cut off, gloves can often be more of a hindrance than a help.  Why?  The feeling in your hands and fingers is lost so you are very likely to misjudge your actions, leading to injury.  Especially if the blade used is a blunt one!  No, this is not a mistake, it does say blunt!  Why is a blunt knife more dangerous than a sharp one?  Because the user applies much more pressure to the knife for it to cut through the wire and when it slips it does much greater damage, causing much worse of an injury.

Stanley Knife or Cable Cutters

In our opinion, we would always choose a Stanley Knife.  Why?  Because it easier to use, cheaper, has replaceable blades so you can always keep them sharp, has a safety locking device, it’s sturdy, it’s slim and available in multiple sizes and lengths.  It may not be able to cut through industrial SWA wires very easily but…nothing is perfect…and realistically, how often are you going to be cutting through those anyway?!

Famous Five and the Stanley Knife

5-stanley-knife-knives-knife-pointApparently, every man has a toolkit and apparently in this toolkit there are certain items.  But it seems that there just needs to be the essential five to keep your man fully equipped for sorting out any DIY issues in your home.  What are the famous five I hear you ask?  Well, for under £50 your toolkit can and should have…

5th – A Spirit Level

No one likes a wonky shelf or picture hanging at an odd angle, and a spirit level can fix this so easily, quickly and efficiently.  Hold it so and move it until the bubble is perfectly in the middle of the two markers and then you know that you have created a perfectly straight line.

4th – A Tape Measure

Hand or arm lengths may stay the say but they are not particularly accurate, so if you are not wanting a guestimate and need to be rather specific with your measurements, then purchase a tape measure.  For specific things, such as lengths of furniture, amount of wallpaper and numbers of tiles need, buying a tape measure and making exact measurement can, not only save you time from having to take excess back or buy more but will also mean that you don’t over spend, too. So, be economical and buy a tape measure.

3rd – Screwdrivers

There are hundreds of different options available when it comes down to Screwdrivers, but really all you need to decide is whether or not you want interchangeable tips – A great idea if you are short on space.

2nd – Hammer

Yes, yes, we know, you can hammer a nail in with any old, hard object but it’s going to be a botch job.  Buy a Hammer.  It has two purposes – hammering nails in with one end and pulling nails out with the other end.

1stStanley Knife

Stanley knives are extremely sharp, retractable, multifunctional blades which can cut through almost anything.  Be careful of your fingers and it would be advisable to buy a cutting mat so that you do not ruin your home work surfaces or remove your fingers.

More About Stanley Knives

There are multiple different types of Stanley Knife.  They are extremely popular because they are lightweight, durable, long-lasting and the blades can be replaced as often as you like for a very low price.  They come in different duty sizes, blade sizes and some Stanley Knives, such as the Stanley Interlock Knife have a locking mechanism.  Stanley is one of the worlds most trusted brand names in the knife world and are used by all serious tradesmen.  So, if you are a DIY fanatic or are also a tradesman yourself, then why not order yourself a Stanley Knife – We promise you won’t regret it!

The Versatility of the Stanley Knife

cupcakes-knife-stanley-knife-blades-knife-pointDads are special people – they look after, care for and provide for you.  So why not show them just how much they mean to you and how grateful you are during 2016?  All you need is a Stanley Knife, some of our crafty ideas and the rest of the artistic flare is completely up to you.

Cut out Banners and Cards with a Stanley Knife

A great alternative for the standard shop bought Birthday, Fathers Day, Valetines, or thank you cards for any man in your life – why not make your own personalised card or even banner!  They are simple, quick and cheap to make and you can have loads of fun getting the kids involved, too.  Just find some colour card or pictures, stencil the letter shapes you need, like “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAD!” and cut them out using a Stanley Knife on an appropriate protective mat and be careful of your fingers.  Then either attach them on to a card with glue or on to a piece of string, ribbon or paper bunting depending on whether you want to make a card or banner and the job is done!

Printable “Love Dad” Labels for Stanley Knives

Create label lookalike vouchers on the computer which are unique coupons entitling Dad, Husband, Grandad, Boyfriend etc to things which are special or sacred to them.  Great for the children on a rainy day, they can create their own vouchers, print them on to card and then cut them out using Stanley Knives or scissors under supervision.  Examples of vouchers can be “ You are entitled to: 1 nap in peace”, “A concert by your Grandchildren”, “Help in the Garden on Sunday”, “You are solely in charge of the remote control on Saturday night”.

Sun-ny Day Cut Out Stanley Knife Project

All you need for this is a sunny day, thick cardboard big enough to make a sign and the trusty Stanley Knife…oh and a camera and probably someone extra to help you take a photo.  Cut out your short message with your Stanley Knife out of the thick cardboard eg “I LOVE JOHN”, make sure you are holding the sign upside down and stand in a sunny, flat spot.  The sun will shine through your message on your cardboard and your shadows will make it obvious it’s you, without all of your features being apparent in detail.  Get someone to take a picture of your shadows and your message.  This is not only lovely but also a great memory of how little (and sweet) your children were at certain ages, or special places – memories and moments are captured in these cut out photos.

Stanley Knives and Baking

Does the man in your life love a good slice of cake or a bun with his cup of tea?  Why not make some buns and make some flags with unique messages written on them?  They can be nice, they can be funny, they can be flirty, they can be…anything!  Cut the card out in a double flag shape with your Stanley Knife, wrap it around a cocktail stick with a bit of glue, leave them to dry and then write your message.  Then having made your little cupcakes, chocolate chip muffins or blueberry buns (whatever their favourite is) you can add an appropriately messaged flag and give it to your favourite man with his cup of time.  This is the perfect way of always getting what you want…!

Could you Survive in the Wilderness with only a Stanley Knife?

stanley-knife-knife-point

Have you heard of Bear Grylls?  This intrepid explorer runs wild in scarily hostile environments for a living and has nothing but the clothes on his back and his stanley knife! Because Bear Grylls is so adept at extreme survival in extreme scenarios, he is now taking people on once in a lifetime experiences, known as the Bear Grylls Survival Academy.  It is a course which promises to teach adults the basics of wild survival and amazingly, Bear has now come up with a family version, where everyone can get involved.

Bear Grylls and the Stanley Knife

Bear Grylls courses consist of learning many new skills essential for survival in the wilderness, which can include:

  • Survival Academy begins in Dibba (Oman, UAE) where all participants meet the instructors who are suitably dressed and looking the part in their Bear Grylls t-shirts, their stanley knives attached at their hips and boots tied ready for action.
  • All worldly possession removed, including everything participants were told to bring eg fleece, hat, chocolate bar…EVERYTHING! Then the participants packed their rucksacks with the items they were specifically provided with which included a sheet, roll mat, mosquito net, water bladder, headlamp, spade, harness, helmet and a bag of fish and kidneys.
  • The first walk in 30 degree heat began and if they reached a certain point within 30 minutes then participants received a Stanley knife.
  • Scrambling
  • How to take advantage of shade
  • How to tackle steep climbs
  • How to make a pit-style solar still for water
  • First aid lessons – from sprained ankles to severe injuries
  • How to bind rucksacks together to make stretchers
  • How to make a makeshift carriage out of ropes
  • How to light fires using cotton wool, Vaseline, flint and steel
  • Fishing, gutting and cooking
  • Camping
  • Trying new foods, including skewered kidneys
  • Knots
  • Rock climbing

The Essential Stanley Knife

A Stanley knife is an extra heavy duty, retractable, interlocking knife which can have either snap-off blades of non segmented blades.  The body of the knife is made from die-cast metal but it is still very light and of course it is a very small item which takes up very little room in a rucksack or pocket, so ideal for expeditions, such as the Bear Grylls Survival Academy.  It has safety mechanism, too, to stop you from losing a finger.  These include a simple locking mechanism and a strong, durable, patented wedge lock which retains the blade in its intended position when in use.

Great British Bake Off’s Ian Cumming’s New Christmas Recipe with the help of a Stanley Knife

chocolate-stanley-knife-knife-point

Ian admits he is not much of a cake baker but he does make bread multiple times each week and knows that no meal is complete without a pudding. His favourite way to conclude a meal, therefore, is with a tart, new recipes of which he has created for you to try this Christmas, with the help of some technical equipment, like Stanley knives.  Here is our favourite recipe at Knife Point

Chocolate, Chestnut and Marmalade Tarts

For the pastry (making approximately 9/10, 10cm tarts):

120g unsalted butter at room temperature

70g icing sugar

25g ground almonds

Pinch of table salt

Half tsp vanilla paste

1 large egg

220g plain flour (plus more for dusting)

For the filling:

175g Chestnut paste

70g of dark (70% cocoa) chocolate

70g double cream

80g thick cut marmalade

1 large egg

50g caster sugar

Icing sugar to decorate (optional)

Mixing, Baking, Tasting

Preheat the oven 180°C

So starting with the pastry first, take the butter and put it in to a large mixing bowl briefly beating it with a wooden spoon, before adding the icing sugar and beating again.  Now add ground almonds, salt and the vanilla paste and beat again.  Next beat very briefly your egg in to the mixture, but only to the degree that the yolk bursts.  Your mixture will and should look like it has hardly been mixed, but add the flour and all of this will immediately be sorted out and your pastry dough will be instantly smooth.  Shape your dough in to a disc, wrap in Clingfilm and fridge chill for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Flour a clean, flat surface and roll out your chilled pastry as thin as you can – hopefully you can get it to be the thickness of a 50 pence piece.  Ian uses a 12cm diameter cutter to cut discs as they are the perfect fit for his tart tins but you may want to use different sized cutters and tins.  Press the dough with your chosen sized cutter and return them to the fridge for another 30 minutes minimum.

Now for the contents of tart – start by breaking the chocolate up in to small pieces, putting them in to a mixing bowl with the double cream, before warming it for 20 seconds on high in the microwave and stirring it.  If there are still lumps, return it to the microwave for another 10 seconds and stir again.  Take care not to overheat the chocolate and double cream combo as it will split if it gets too hot!  When it looks glossy and smooth add the marmalade and chestnut paste.  Separately beat the egg and the caster sugar together in to a paste and then add this to everything else and combine well.

Finally, it is time to fill the tart cases, so line your tin if you feel it is necessary in your tin, blind baking is apparently optional and subjective.  Fill the tart cases as full as you can (to the top) and put them in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes.  You will know when the tarts are done when they have lost their glossy shine in the middle and have risen all over.  Leave your chocolatey Christmas tarts to cool before turning them out of the tin and, of course, tasting them!

Knife Point 1 Fat Max Stanley Knife Blade

Stanley Knives are helpful during Cooking

To add a festive touch to these chocolately Christmas tarts, Ian decided to add Christmas tree designs to the top off them.  He did this by drawing a stencil on to paper so that the shape and size was correct, cutting it out using a Stanley knife for ease and definition.  He then used icing sugar and the Stanley knife cut stencil to create a Christmas tree design on the top of the tarts, for a festive look, though this could be done with any shape or design of your choice.

If you are one of those students; showing that you are able to work to only the highest levels of accuracy – right from the initial stages of creation – could be the key contributing factor towards your idea’s success.

By taking ownership of the importance of attention to detail; you are also making your own life easier in the process. When dealing with the pressures of university life; taking such measures can be extremely rewarding.

Wasted time remaking models over and over again – because they are cut incorrectly – can be extremely demoralizing. Achieving precision first time is endlessly satisfying; and understanding that you can do this through purchasing the best cutting tools is invaluable.

There are obvious benefits to using products produced by established manufacturers in any profession. Great reputation is there for a reason; often as a result of guaranteed quality assurance from a supplier. With Swann Morton and Stanley knife products; that is something that is a given.

Inaccurate features on the card would result in customers feeling unimpressed with products; and resultantly sales of their products would be significantly affected. The knife chosen by the craft artist making the card can be the difference between achieving success and failure in their business.

Blades Can Be Bought in Packs

Both Swann Morton and Stanley knife blades can be used in the production of a whole host of materials; including paper, card and plastics. Blades can be bought in packs; and are often made to be easily interchangeable to ensure that only the highest quality of work is carried out when using them.

Swann Morton Knife Providers Keeping Eye on News

The man behind the current Channel 4 programme ‘The Island’ recently caused controversy; when he suggested that children should be allowed to play with knives from a young age. The topic was picked up by the national press; with both The Telegraph and The Independent printing the story.

Bear Grylls attracts an awful lot of attention in the UK due to his position as Chief Scout of the Scouting Association. He also experienced unparalleled levels of success with his show Bear Grylls: Born Survivor; a ‘survival tip technique’ show which earned millions of adoring fans across the globe.

He is a champion of the outdoors; and is never too far from a story which covers encouraging kids to embrace the wild. His comments came as he told the Radio Times that parents should be teaching children “how to embrace and manage risk”.

Using Knives Safely

Grylls has received criticism in the media for his suggestions; after stating during an interview that encouraging children to play with knives could be ‘empowering’. He did state, however, that he felt that way because it’s important for a developing mind to learn to do something in the safest way, as reported in The Independent:

“Sometimes in life we get cut,” he said. “My six-year-old recently cut himself on a knife, and came in with blood pouring everywhere, but, you know what? He’s not cut himself again. He learned how to handle a knife.”

Critics have suggested that this is an idyllic view, and that an accident would never be too far away with children given responsibility of knives. Grylls though; did state in the same interview: “When I say to budding adventurers, ‘Listen – a blunt penknife is a dangerous knife. Make sure it’s really sharp’ – the kids’ faces light up. Like all kids, they want a mega-sharp penknife – great, but teach them to respect it and use it properly,” countering the argument that his thinking is purely reckless, and adding some logic to his quotes.

The item concerned is a trench knife – otherwise known as a trench dagger – and was taken from a display case within the museum. The incident was believed to have occurred between the hours of 10am and 1.15pm on Monday the 5th May.

Stolen Over Bank Holiday Weekend

It is thought that knife was stolen whilst volunteers from the museum were showing members of the public around over the last Bank Holiday weekend. Allan Reed is a volunteer at the museum; and said that it was both an important and significant part of the military history of Essex.

The knife itself has a knuckle duster grip; and has Vulcan and Sheffield Steel on the blade. The markings GMH Stealing; Essex Reg 1916 can be found inscribed onto the blade. Anyone with access to information on the theft; or who may have been offered the item for sale, should be directed to PC Lisa-Ann Gore at Essex police; who told The Enquirer, Essex:

Very Important To The Museum

“The museum would like to get the piece back as it is very important to them. It is also a weapon and we would like to get it back in safe hands. I would urge anyone with any information to contact me as soon as possible.”

Memorabilia items from WW1 can be extremely valuable; and are often fantastic examples of knife production in previous historical times. In product design; lessons can always be learnt from the past.
